PURPOSE: Editorial illustration mock cover for the American Journal of Bioethics. Illustration based on abstract for an article about “the understanding of understanding” and how researchers can gauge if research participants fully understand what they are consenting to when they give their informed consent. The concept has to do with being presented with simplified information/instructions and encountering a landscape/task ahead that is actually much more complicated than that.
